On September 7th, 2010 Professor Rodney Hill delivered a lecture about Creativity and Personal Space. In my opinion, this topic impacted me the most. The lecture’s main focus was human behavior and our need of “personal space”
At the moment I am sitting in one of the cubicles of the Architecture Department’s Reference Center and unconsciously I sat farthest to all the people. Even though chairs were empty near the front I refused to sit on a table were someone was already occupying a chair.
After realizing I also had unconscious innate rules of personal space in me, like all other Americans, I decide to conduct a little experiment. I would sit exactly next to a person sitting in an empty table. After doing just that, the person immediately got uncomfortable, looked at me in annoyance and left to sit somewhere else. In addition to looking like a very odd individual with a complete lack of social skills, I was also able to make a connection with the lecture given about six weeks ago. Learning this also taught me that even though each individual is unique, we all share certain characteristics.
